A Tune for Tuesday No.12

 

Earlier this month we invited friends over for a classic album evening. The evening was in honor of David's birthday, so the rules were that we need to have a classic album for each of his decades and it had to be on vinyl: CD entries were strictly forbidden. So the night before we spent much time debating what albums could carry such a title. There were plenty of classic songs, but the criteria we'd set ourselves was that it had to be a classic album from beginning to end. By the time our guests arrived we had four piles. It was funny how we had a towering pile for the 70's; a generous pile for the 80's; a somewhat smaller pile for the 90's and a smattering for the noughties (don't you just despise that word!). I guess it had something to do with the declining number of albums now being produced on vinyl,  but why did our collection of 70's vinyl come head and shoulders above the rest? Maybe it's an age thing, or maybe it's that the 70's was the decade of the classic album. A combination of both I expect.

Anyhow, this was one of the most popular votes that evening: Fleetwood Mac's Rumours. So without further ado, here is one of my favourite tracks from it. Enjoy.

A Tune for Tuesday No. 11

It's been a while since I last did a 'Tune for Tuesday', so I thought it would be nice to have one today.   This week it's a song from one of my favourite ever artists George Harrison. There has been lots of talk on the radio in the last week about the new Martin Scorsese film Living in the Material World; a film that I will watch for sure. Also, this weekend just gone marked what would have been John Lennon's 71st birthday. 

So this weeks tune, I think is quite fitting. The song All Those Years Ago featured all three remaining Beatles (George Harrison, Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney), though this was expressly a Harrison single. It is one of only a few non-Beatles songs to feature three members of the group. Harrison and Starr recorded the song at Harrison's Friar Park studio in November 1980. After Lennon's death the following month, Harrison removed Starr's vocals (but left Starr's drumming track) and recorded his own vocals with rewritten lyrics honouring Lennon. McCartney, his wife Linda and their Wings bandmate Denny Laine visited Friar Park to record backing vocals.

A Tune for Tuesday No.10

This week my Tune for Tuesday is by way of Crosby, Still, Nash & Young. I like quite a few of their tunes, but after a bit of deliberating, I settled on the track 'Our House'. It's a simple song that warms the ears making for a very pleasant listening experience. I can't quite hit the nail on the head, but this tune has such familiar nostalgic tones to it. Maybe it's the subject, maybe it's the era, maybe it's because it bares an uncanny resemblance to the songs that Rod, Jane & Freddy would sing on Rainbow? Whatever, I like it. Enjoy.

A Tune for Tuesday No. 8

This tune is up there in my favourite all time songs. When it comes on the radio, I have to stop what I'm doing, turn up the volume and just listen and absorb it all in ... to me it's a three and a half minute musical masterpiece. The video is a montage of beautiful images. Just lovely.

A Tune for Tuesday No.7

There is no under lying reason to this weeks Tune for Tuesday. It's just a song I love.

To date, this could be classed as a fairly 'modern' choice for a Tune for Tuesday song; 1981. But watch the video and do the maths and you'll see that this tune is in fact now 30 years young. Oh, how time flies!

A Tune for Tuesday: Mr Blue Sky

Now I'm generally not one for 'lame' cover versions, it has to be said. By that I mean when an artist sings the song of another artist in much the same way as the original artist had. That is a cop out. 

But sometimes, an artist will take a song and reinvent it. Done well, it's acceptable. It's shows creativity.

One of my favourite songs ever has to be Mr Blue Sky by E.L.O. Now a few weeks back I heard a cover version of this song on the radio. It took me a while to 'name that tune' so to speak; I knew the words, but the tempo was all wrong. I think I liked it though. Then, the radio DJ told me that this cover version was by an artist called Jim Bob. No, surely not the Jim Bob who fronted the late eighties / early nineties band Cater The Unstoppable Sex Machine? I'd seen them live a fair few times. Looking back now that band makes me cringe, but hats off to Jim Bob for moving on and coming up with this. Give it a listen ...

Rather beautiful isn't it. But make no mistake, it does touch the original in any way or from, so if that rendition has given you an E.L.O. ear worm, below is the original in all its glory. Turn up the volume and enjoy.

Happy Birthday Arthur / A Tune for Tuesday ...

It's been a while since my last post. School and house issues have been demanding much of my time lately and I've generally just been really busy. However, I couldn't not post today for it is a very important day in our household; Arthur's birthday. My little man is now a very grown-up two years old. He isn't really aware what is happening. Lily has been telling him it's his birthday for a few weeks now, so he frequently says' berfday' and sometimes he follows that statement with 'tooooo'. He seems to have learnt that those two words go together at the moment and gets him a response of smiles.

Maybe he'll get an inkling that it is a special day later on in the day. We're going to have a little party at home for him and seven close friends. It will be a simple affair of toys, fish-fingers and chips, birthday cake, balloons and playdough. It will be right up his street.

What with it being a Tuesday, I thought I ought to make an effort to post up a Tune for Tuesday. This tune is dedicated to my wonderful birthday boy. I am blessed to have him; he is warm, funny, amazing company and he effortlessly makes all my days sunny ones. I'm sure I can speak for his daddy and big sister as well when I say that he has, without doubt, made our family rounded, complete and pretty damn perfect! A Tune for Tuesday No. 4

With the unseasonably warm and sunny weather we've had of late, I felt the need to post a 'sunny' tune this week.

I've settled upon my choice. Why this song? Firstly it's a simple, happy, sunny melody. Secondly it has been categorised in my head. You see, I've had a 'book in my head' for some time now. In my head it will probably forever stay. I've yet to put pen to paper or get much beyond it's sketchy setting and vague cast of character's. But I have however decided that this tune would be the song that would play to open the first scene should my unwritten book ever be made into a film. Crazy I know.

Anyway, this week our songstress is a name that nowadays is more commonly associated with rather poor light entertainment shows. But cast those thoughts from your mind. Back when this song was a hit, this young lady was hanging out with The Beatles and wearing Biba and Mary Quant .... very credible you might agree.

So without further ado, ladies and gentlemen, I give you Miss Cilla Black ....

A Tune for Tuesday No. 3

It's Tuesday again, so time to post another 'Tune for Tuesday'. Random, nostalgic and good-for-the-soul, this week's tune is one of my favourite David Bowie tracks. I first came to really know this song in fairly recent years. An old friend who now lives in Ireland, posted me a CD with this one song burnt onto it whilst I was heavily pregnant with Lily. I played it over and over, and it now brings back happy memories of excitement and anticipation of very nearly being a mother.

As if that wasn't reason enough to make this song 'A Tune for Tuesday', today is also the said friends birthday. So it has to be and can only be.

A Tune for Tuesday no.2 ...

So, I started 'A Tune for Tuesday' last week and it's now time for another. I heard this much-loved song on the radio recently. I'd forgotten what a lovely nostalgic quality it had. It simply makes me smile. So turn the volume up a notch and enjoy.
